Haarlem Station Barrel-Vault Canopy, Netherlands
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
The barrel-vault iron canopy at Haarlem station frames the empty platform in strict symmetry — cast-iron columns drawing the eye toward the arched glass end wall, a single pendant lamp anchoring the apex. Victorian railway architecture at this scale is structural argument as much as shelter: the geometry does all the persuading. The overcast sky behind the arched glass window diffuses into the deep shadows of the train shed, holding the space between weight and light.
