Amsterdamse Poort, Haarlem — Medieval Gate Tower Under Overcast Sky
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
Amsterdamse Poort rises from a low angle against a heavy overcast sky, its red-brick Gothic facade compressed into a tight vertical frame. The stepped gable, corner turrets, and arched gateway hold the geometry flat and decisive — austere medieval architecture doing exactly what it was built to do. The gold clock face and weathervane catch the only warm tone in the frame; everything else belongs to brick, slate, and cloud. Haarlem's last surviving city gate, carrying seven centuries of Noord-Holland weather without apology.
