A narrow residential street in Haarlem draws the eye toward a break in the clouds, the herringbone cobblestones pulling the perspective deep between rows of stepped brick gables. The facades stack uniformly on both sides — each roofline a small staircase, each window a repeated beat — until the lane gives way to a stand of trees and open sky. Summer light falls unevenly here, heavy on the right-hand pavement and absent from the ground below the buildings, which gives the street its contrast: the sky is loud, the street is quiet.
