Haarlem Bascule Bridge and Step-Gable Facades on the Spaarne

A white steel bascule bridge and a row of 17th-century step-gable facades face each other across the Spaarne — four centuries of Dutch architecture compressed into a single frame. The overcast sky irons out the contrast between old brick and modern steel, making them read as a single composition rather than a collision. Haarlem wears its layers quietly; the canal holds both registers without comment.
