Grote Kerk Haarlem — Gothic Portal and Apse from Below
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
Shot from directly below the portal, the Grote Kerk Haarlem stacks its tracery gable, pointed arches, and apse into a single vertical frame against an overcast Dutch sky. The brick facade holds most of the frame in deep shadow, which is where the mass of the building actually lives — the carved stonework reads as surface texture rather than ornament. The extreme low angle does the compositional work that a straight-on elevation never could: compression reveals structure.
