The Spaarne pulls you straight through the frame — canal quayside on the left, historic brick facades on the right, the white arch of the Gravestenenbrug drawbridge marking the distance. A heavy summer sky sits over Haarlem, flat and unresolved, and the water carries its weight without fuss. The overcast light flattens the drama just enough to make the architecture do the work: stepped gables, orange banners, centuries of riverside commerce pressed into a single corridor.
