Koepelgevangenis Haarlem — Gatehouse and Panopticon Dome
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
The gatehouse of the Koepelgevangenis in Haarlem carries its purpose plainly: the inscription reads STRAF GEVANGENIS, the year in Roman numerals set in stone above the entrance. Three storeys of dark brick, barred windows, and a formal symmetry that was never meant to welcome. Over the right shoulder, the panopticon dome rises — the surveillance architecture that defines the building's interior logic made visible from the street. The flat plane of the facade and the curve of the dome push against each other; institutional authority and geometric ingenuity held in the same frame.
