Koepelgevangenis Haarlem — Panopticon Dome Facade
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
De Koepel in Haarlem is one of the Netherlands' most architecturally singular buildings — a full circular panopticon prison whose radial dome ribs and curved brick drum read as a single, graphic mass. Five tiers of barred windows wrap the facade in relentless rhythm, each row identical, each one a cell. The gold-trimmed entrance sits dead centre beneath the dome, almost decorative against all that utilitarian repetition. An overcast sky presses down flat and grey above it, which is exactly the right kind of light for a building that was designed to observe, not to welcome.
