Teylers Museum Facade, Haarlem
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
Teylers Museum occupies the same neoclassical stone front it has held since the eighteenth century — pilasters framing a arched entrance, bronze figures crowning the pediment, a flag hanging slack in overcast air. The symmetry is the whole argument: every ornamental decision on this facade has a counterpart, and the flat Dutch sky holds it all in place without competing. The building is civic confidence made permanent, and the clouds do it a quiet favour.
