Extreme low-angle worm's-eye view of a Gothic brick church apse in Haarlem, the buttresses and lancet windows in deep silhouette against a dramatically overcast, blown-out sky.

Gothic Church Apse in Haarlem — Worm's-Eye View

23 May 2025 · Haarlem

Shot from directly below, the polygonal apse of this Haarlem Gothic church becomes something closer to geometry than architecture. Brick buttresses and lancet tracery compress into a single looming mass; the pinnacles cut upward into a blown-out sky ringed with cloud. The silhouette does the structural work that the detail usually does — every pointed arch and crocketed spire read as line rather than ornament. Mass against light, the medieval mason's logic made visible from an angle he never intended.
