Grote Kerk Haarlem from the Grote Markt

Sint-Bavokerk fills the Grote Markt from edge to edge, its Gothic facade pressing hard against an overcast sky roiling with cloud. The fisheye perspective bends the square's cobblestones toward the viewer and pushes the church's buttresses and tower into something close to oppressive scale. Surrounding it, the stepped gable of the Vleeshal and the Verwey Museum's arcade hold their own — the square as a whole is the argument, not just the cathedral at its centre.
