Amsterdamse Poort Gateway, Haarlem — Ribbed Brick Vault

The Amsterdamse Poort frames the outside world as a bright rectangle at the end of a dim tunnel. Gothic rib vaulting fans across the brick ceiling overhead, a pendant lantern burns orange at its centre, and the red timber doors hold the shadow on either side. The arch-within-arch draws the eye through — two openings that compress the street and the sky into a single vertical strip of daylight. Interior architecture rarely gives you this much geometry in one frame.
