Haarlem Canal with Stepped Gable Houses, Spaarne
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
The Spaarne cuts through Haarlem under a sky that can't decide whether to break open or hold. On the right bank, a stepped gable — brick, white-trimmed, built for permanence — stands alongside a curtain-walled glass building that refuses to pretend it belongs to the seventeenth century. The canal holds both: the weight of Dutch vernacular architecture and the lightness of contemporary glass, the sky's drama and the water's flat calm.
