Sint-Bavokerk Facade, Haarlem — Gothic Tower from Below
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
Grote Kerk in Haarlem, seen from directly below — the worm's-eye perspective compresses the full height of the Sint-Bavokerk facade into a single converging plane. The Gothic tracery window and flanking pinnacles read as a graphic silhouette against a mackerel sky that does most of the atmospheric work. Brick mass and carved stone detail collapse into one dark shape; the sky fills the rest of the frame. Architecture this vertical rewards the angle that refuses to flatten it.
