Spaarne River Under a Dramatic Summer Sky, Haarlem

A churning cloud mass fills two-thirds of the frame above the Spaarne, pressing down on a river that barely reflects the light left between the breaks. The waterway draws the eye toward the distant Haarlem skyline — Sint-Bavokerk just visible in the haze — while a pair of mooring posts mark the foreground like punctuation. The sky is the subject here; the city is context. Heavy atmosphere, low and deliberate, doing the compositional work the ground cannot.
