Grote Kerk Haarlem — Gothic Spire and Buttresses from Below
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
Shot from ground level, the Grote Kerk in Haarlem stops being a building and becomes a system of forces. Gothic buttresses, brick nave, and the Sint-Bavokerk spire compress into a single upward surge — the overcast sky not background but counterweight, holding the mass in place. The low angle reveals the structural logic medieval builders encoded in stone and brick: everything pushes toward the spire, and the spire pushes back against the clouds.
