De Adriaan stands at the edge of the Spaarne, its dark timber body rising on a brick base above the water. The sail arms reach into a heavy overcast sky that occupies as much of the frame as the mill itself — structure and weather working the composition together. Haarlem's canal-front buildings close the background, grounding the mill in the city it has belonged to for centuries.
