Baroque Courtyard Garden, Haarlem Hofje
23 May 2025 · Haarlem
A baroque dormer with its clock face holds the exact centre of the composition, flanked by chimney stacks and a stone pediment heavy with ornament. The formal parterre below it — clipped box hedges, a stone urn on the path — pulls the eye down from sky to garden with the same deliberate symmetry the 17th-century regent architects intended. Storm clouds press low over the roofline, giving the whole courtyard its institutional gravity. The building commands its enclosure; the garden submits to the same geometry.
