ENCI Quarry Lake at Sint-Pietersberg, Maastricht
8 February 2026 · ENCI-groeve Sint-Pietersberg
The flooded ENCI quarry at Sint-Pietersberg holds two landscapes in one frame: the warm sandstone cliff with its lime kiln arches catching the last of the autumn sun, and the cement plant towers still standing above the treeline behind it. Nature has moved back in fast — reed beds line the water's edge, bare birches fill the slope, and the still lake surface mirrors all of it in a single band of amber and blue. Extraction made this place; rewilding is slowly making it something else.
