A tall smokestack at the ENCI cement works on Sint-Pietersberg doubles perfectly in the still water of a settling pond below — the industrial complex rising through terraced embankments toward a bare winter hill. The scale of the quarry operation reads in every layer: aggregate stockpiles, rotary kilns, and rusted pipework stacked against the chalk-pale retaining walls. Still water and clear winter sky pull the whole site into a quiet that the industrial weight cannot quite fill.
