Steel Staircase Descending ENCI Quarry Face, Sint-Pietersberg
8 February 2026 · ENCI-groeve Sint-Pietersberg
A galvanised steel staircase cuts diagonally down the eroded chalk face of the ENCI quarry on Sint-Pietersberg, near Maastricht. Visitors cluster on the landing and along the descent, small against the scale of the crater below. The engineered intervention doesn't compete with the geology — it submits to it, tracing the contours of the excavated wall rather than correcting them. Clear winter light flattens the dry grass and bare scrub into a single tonal field, leaving the metal structure as the only precise edge in the frame.
