ENCI-groeve Quarry Pond, Sint-Pietersberg, Maastricht
8 February 2026 · ENCI-groeve Sint-Pietersberg
Sint-Pietersberg holds its geology plainly: limestone cliff faces cut in horizontal strata, a still quarry pond at the floor of the excavation, bare winter scrub running the rim. The ENCI-groeve is both industrial heritage site and emerging nature reserve — the same terraced walls that once fed a cement works now frame a flooded basin where reed and willow are quietly taking back the ground. Clear winter light pulls the chalk pale and the water flat, and the two things — extraction and rewilding — sit in one frame without either cancelling the other.
