Staircase Over ENCI-groeve, Sint-Pietersberg
8 February 2026 · ENCI-groeve Sint-Pietersberg
Concrete steps descend from the rim of Sint-Pietersberg straight toward the flooded floor of ENCI-groeve, the former limestone quarry outside Maastricht. The staircase does two things at once: it organises the descent for visitors and pulls every sightline down into the basin where extraction once ran. Clear winter light cuts hard from the south, throwing the railing's shadow diagonally across the steps and flattening the quarry lake into a pale mirror. Industrial infrastructure built to serve a working site now frames a reclaimed landscape — the geometry of industry, the quiet of a place that has stopped being used and started being something else.
