The ENCI-groeve quarry spreads across the hillside south of Maastricht — terraced chalk faces, a settling pond catching the winter sky, and the cement plant's chimney stack holding the middle ground. Clear winter light gives the scene a clinical stillness: the sky is open and luminous, the foreground water an almost perfect mirror, and the industrial structures between them carry the full weight of a century of extraction. Sense of place as much as subject — this is Sint-Pietersberg after industry, not quite reclaimed, not quite abandoned.
