Oostpoort Delft — Medieval City Gate and Drawbridge
29 May 2026 · Delft
Delft's Oostpoort is the only surviving medieval city gate in the city, its twin brick towers rising to pointed spires above a white drawbridge that still spans the canal. The geometry here is the point: two Gothic spires pulling the eye upward while the white lattice of the ophaalbrug drives a hard diagonal across the frame. Ancient masonry does the structural work; the drawbridge mechanism beside it is as precisely engineered as anything built since. A cyclist at the lower left anchors the scale without breaking the composition.
