Oostpoort Delft — Medieval Water Gate and Twin Spires
29 May 2026 · Delft
Oostpoort stands where the city ends and the canal begins — a medieval gate built over the water so that passage itself required crossing it. The brick arch frames a narrow gracht running straight through the gatehouse, and two flanking spires push the vertical geometry hard against a flat overcast sky. It is a structure that does two things at once: fortification and bridge, threshold and landmark. That double function is visible in every line of it.
