Oostpoort Delft with Drawbridge, Dutch Medieval City Gate

Delft's Oostpoort frames itself twice here — once in the brick and Gothic spires of the 14th-century gate, and again in the white ironwork of the drawbridge mechanism that pulls your eye straight into the arch. The chain rigging and diagonal struts work as a geometric armature; the medieval towers sit behind it with the patience of things that have been waiting six hundred years. Lily pads float on the canal to the right, summer green against dark water, indifferent to the whole arrangement.
