The benchmark for what a camera can be.

Leica Camera is a German optical instruments company headquartered in Wetzlar. The cameras — M-series rangefinders, Q-series fixed-lens full-frames, SL mirrorless, D-Lux compacts, Sofort instant — sit alongside a Sport Optics line of binoculars, rangefinders, and riflescopes. Lenses are ground and assembled in-house, to tolerances that reflect a century of optical manufacturing.
The tension Leica owns is straightforward: the price is high, the build justifies it, and the heritage is real rather than performed. The M-system has been in continuous production since 1954 — not a marketing position, but a supply chain and customer base that keep replacement parts available for sixty-year-old cameras. The quality is not legacy. It is the current production standard.
