Leica M EV1

The M EV1 is the first M-system body with a built-in electronic viewfinder where the optical rangefinder usually sits. The 5.76MP OLED EVF replaces the rangefinder mechanism — focus peaking, magnification, exposure preview, all in the eyepiece — while the rest of the platform stays M11-P: 60MP full-frame BSI CMOS, M-mount compatibility with every M-mount lens since 1954, Content Credentials metadata signing, BP-SCL7 battery. The classic frame-selector lever on the front is repurposed as a configurable function switch (focus peaking, magnification, or digital zoom).

Position in the lineup

The M EV1 is for someone who wants the M body, the M-mount lens lineage, and manual focus discipline, but finds the rangefinder either limiting (ultra-wide and macro lenses sit awkwardly with rangefinder framing; very fast lenses benefit from peaking and magnification) or unfamiliar (focus peaking is a more legible focusing aid than aligning split-image patches). Within Leica's M lineup it sits alongside the rangefinder M11 family rather than replacing it — Leica frames it as a new branch of the M, not the next M11. Even though the design breaks the rangefinder lineage that gave the M-system its name, the body, the mount, and the discipline of manual focus remain.
