Gothic Church Steeple Rising Above Leiden Nave Rooflines

4 May 2025 · Leiden

Two nave rooflines converge in a sharp V, and the steeple takes the apex — a geometry the building's architects designed for, and the upward angle makes legible again. The spire tapers from a Gothic lantern tier to a stone needle capped with a gold orb and weathervane, all set against clear Dutch blue sky. Brick, limestone dressing, pointed arches, and buttresses in close proximity: this is Leiden's medieval masonry doing exactly what it was built to do.
