Dutch Stepped Gable, Anno 1889 — Leiden Architecture

4 May 2025 · Leiden

A Dutch stepped gable rises against a deep blue sky in Leiden, its brick facade carrying the founding inscription 'Opgericht Anno 1889' in stone. The trapgevel form is one of the Low Countries' most persistent architectural gestures — assertive at roofline level, ornate in its brickwork detailing, yet resolved into a single clean silhouette from street level below. A weather vane tops the stepped pinnacle, still reading the wind above a building that has stood for well over a century. Historic civic architecture at its most legible.
