Zijlpoort, Leiden — City Gate Over the Canal
4 May 2025 · Leiden
Zijlpoort stands at the water's edge in Leiden, its 17th-century brick body anchored by a white classical arch and crowned by a clock lantern that clears the treeline. The canal foreground pulls the gate forward; the overcast sky presses it flat into the frame. A fortification built for control, it sits now as pure geometry — the arch, the octagonal roof, the cupola stacked in one clean vertical above the waterway. Dutch civic architecture at its most deliberate: decoration applied exactly where authority needed to be read from a boat.
