Gothic Nave of Grote Kerk Breda — Ribbed Vault Interior

12 May 2026 · Breda

The nave of Grote Kerk Breda pulls the eye upward through ribbed vaults that fan out from stone columns toward painted ceiling bosses. Shadow holds the foreground — the dark choir screen and chandelier anchoring the base while white clerestory light bleeds in from the apse windows beyond. Gothic architecture built for vertical drama; the monochrome strips away the decorative colour and lets the geometry do the work it was always designed to do.
