Copper Beech Catkins in Spring, Netherlands
14 April 2026 · Maastricht
A single copper beech branch caught at the moment of bud burst — new leaves unfurling in deep burgundy and warm copper, catkins hanging in loose clusters beneath them. The backlight does the work here, pushing through the translucent foliage and separating each leaf from the pale blue sky behind it. Fagus sylvatica purpurea at its most theatrical: the tree looks fully spent and fully alive at the same time.
