Close-up of wind-rippled sand drifting across a smooth grey concrete surface at golden hour, with a sharp material boundary cutting diagonally through the frame. Katwijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

Sand Drift Over Coastal Concrete, Katwijk aan Zee

12 May 2025 · Katwijkaan Zee

Wind-driven sand advances across smooth concrete pavement at Katwijk aan Zee, the boundary between the two materials doing more compositional work than either surface alone. The ripple pattern is aeolian — shaped by the same North Sea wind that carved dunes across the Dutch coast for centuries. Here it reads as a miniature landscape: peaks, hollows, and a ragged front line. The warm gold of the sand against the cool grey concrete is not a contrast engineered in post; it is the light at that hour on those two surfaces, doing exactly what it does.
