Bronze equestrian statue on a stone plinth in the foreground, with the Royal Liver Building clock tower and Liver Bird finial rising behind it under an overcast autumn sky at Liverpool Pier Head.

Royal Liver Building and Equestrian Statue, Liverpool Pier Head

9 October 2019 · Liverpool

The King Edward VII equestrian statue stands on its stone plinth at Pier Head, the Royal Liver Building rising directly behind it — clock tower, Liver Bird finial, and ten storeys of Edwardian Baroque pulling the eye upward in a single vertical read. The bronze and the limestone are doing the same work from different centuries: marking Liverpool's place on the waterfront. An overcast autumn sky deepens above both, pressing the whole composition into the ground.
