Liverpool Pier Head from cobblestone waterfront: war memorial with poppy wreaths in foreground, Royal Liver Building with clock towers and Liver Birds behind, Mersey Ferries terminal to the left, overcast sky above.

Royal Liver Building at Pier Head, Liverpool

9 October 2019 · Liverpool

The Royal Liver Building rises above Liverpool's Pier Head on a heavy overcast sky, the Liver Birds perched at the crown of both towers. In the foreground, a war memorial with poppy wreaths laid at its base anchors the composition — civic memory and civic pride occupying the same cobblestone square. The Mersey Ferries terminal sits to the left, its angular contemporary form pressed against more than a century of Edwardian stonework. One square holds all of it without trying.
