Sky takes up most of the frame here — a broad altocumulus field over the North Sea coast at Katwijk aan Zee, broken only by the flat line of the horizon and a single figure standing at the waterline. A tidal pool cuts across the foreground, holding the cloud cover in still water below while the real thing churns above it. The figure is small enough to read as scale rather than subject, which is the point: the coast is vast, the sky is vaster, and both are indifferent to the person standing between them.
