Medieval Gatehouse Tower, Maastricht City Wall

A roofless crenellated gatehouse and its cylindrical flanking turret stand along the Maastricht city wall, the rubble masonry still holding its ground above the riverbank vegetation. Centuries of layered sandstone face a postwar apartment block directly behind — the proximity is blunt, not decorative. The wall was built to hold a perimeter; what it holds now is the gap between then and now.
