Solitary Oak on Sint Pietersberg Meadow, South Limburg

A solitary oak stands in full summer canopy at Sint Pietersberg, its broad crown filling the frame against a sky packed with cumulus. The wildflower meadow at its base — purple and yellow scattered through the long grass — roots the tree in its season. The sky does as much work as the tree: the clouds pile and shift, giving the composition a depth that a clear day would flatten. Subject and setting hold each other in balance — neither would read as strongly alone.
