Wooden Soffit and Arena Dome, Rotterdam

A slatted timber soffit cuts diagonally across the frame, its warm-toned planks pulling hard against the cool corrugated-metal skin of the arena dome behind it. The two surfaces are doing opposite things — one overhead and enclosing, the other curved and open — and the gap between them is where the overcast sky bleeds through. Monochrome strips the materials to texture and weight, which is where the real contrast lives.
