Striped awnings — alternating grey and red — step across the windows in a graphic rhythm that the overcast light holds without shadow. The 'BASEMENT' sign sits at the threshold exactly, anchoring the split between what is above and what is below. Amsterdam School brickwork gives the whole facade its weight: ornamental friezes at the top, stone dressings around every opening, a building that was built to last and knows it.
