Twin Neo-Gothic Gables with Madonna Niche, Hoofddorp

Two stepped gables rise in near-perfect symmetry above a Hoofddorp street, their dark brick facades banded by decorative tile friezes and topped with iron cross finials. Between them, a Madonna figure stands in her niche — the one element that breaks the geometry and holds the whole composition in place. The deep blue sky above pulls the colour flat, turning the facade into something closer to a graphic than a building. This is Dutch civic-religious architecture at its most deliberate: ornament as structure, and structure as statement.
