Modernist Bell Tower Under Restoration, Netherlands

13 May 2025 · Roelofarendsveen

Twin brick pillars frame a suspended louvred carillon box — a modernist church typology that reads more like infrastructure than devotion. Shot at golden hour in South Holland, the warm light pulls the brick geometry forward against a clear summer sky. Scaffolding wraps the base of the tower, adding a layer of present-tense intervention to a structure already built around tension: the weight of the carillon held between two pillars that push upward and apart. Heritage restoration rarely makes the building look more like itself than this.
