Corten Steel Arch and Church Tower, Katwijk aan Zee

A corten steel arch sweeps across the entrance of a civic building in Katwijk aan Zee, its rust-oxide curve set hard against a deep winter blue. Behind the glass facade, a Dutch Reformed church steeple holds its ground — centuries of stone framed by a decade of weathering steel. The arch does what good contemporary architecture does: it changes what was already there by standing next to it.
