A row of tall Amsterdam canal houses on the Damrak, showing varied stepped and bell gables in muted earth tones, reflected in sunlit canal water under a clear blue sky.

Damrak Canal Houses, Amsterdam — Stepped Gable Terrace

10 May 2025 · Amsterdam

The Damrak waterfront lines up its gabled facades in a near-unbroken terrace — brick, stone, and ornamental cornices pressed flat against a deep blue sky. Each building holds its own palette, from dark olive to dusty red to pale cream, yet the row reads as a single graphic frieze. The canal below doubles it: sunlight catches the water in sharp points and stretches the facades into a second, looser version of the same composition.
