Amsterdam Canal Quay Wall — Limestone and Teal Water

5 May 2025 · Amsterdam Zuid

A limestone-clad quay wall meets the canal in Amsterdam Zuid, the pale stone cutting a clean diagonal into dark teal water. Where the masonry meets the waterline, the material relationship is direct — rough-quarried surface against restless, rippled surface. Overcast light flattens the shadow and clarifies the texture on both sides of that boundary. The wall holds the city's edge; the water holds the wall's reflection.
