Low-angle monochrome view of a modernist building at Amsterdam Science Park: horizontal louvred sun-shading fins at left cast striped shadows across a cantilevered walkway bridge, with dark glass panels and a pale sky gap between building volumes.

Horizontal Louvers and Cantilevered Slabs, Amsterdam Science Park

5 May 2025 · Amsterdam Science Park

At Amsterdam Science Park, the façade louvers and stacked cantilevered walkways reduce a complex building to a single graphic problem: how many horizontal lines can one frame hold before the sky becomes the relief. In monochrome, the shadow-striped concrete and deep glass panels push to opposite ends of the tonal range — the architecture doing what colour would only distract from. A clear-sky strip at the top is less sky than punctuation.
