Leiden Pepergasthuis — Latin Inscription at Golden Hour

The Pepergasthuis façade in Leiden reads its own history out loud. Carved into the stone panel beneath the pediment: REPVBLICA SALVA / SAVCIO MILITI / GRATI CIVES — the republic safe, the wounded soldier, the grateful citizens. The cupola above it, octagonal and unhurried, rises against a clear late-afternoon sky. Warm light catches the brick and the limestone cornice in equal measure; the inscription stays in shadow, legible and deliberate. Dutch civic architecture at its most plainspoken — the building tells you exactly what it was built for.
