Dutch Brick Gable with Leaded Windows, Leiden
2 May 2025 · Walk from Leiderdorp to Leiden
A steep brick gable pushes into a clear blue sky, its warm terracotta surface stained with lichen and caught in low golden-hour light. Three lancet windows with geometric leaded tracery run the width of the facade — Art Deco restraint laid into ecclesiastical brick. The stone grotesque perched on the drainpipe bracket at the right edge does exactly what a grotesque is supposed to do: it holds the structural and the absurd in the same frame.
